In 1825, Marc Brunel began a foot tunnel under the Thames — the first tunnel beneath a navigable river. Completed in 1843 by his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was converted for railway use in 1869 and is still used by the London Overground today. The nearby Brunel Museum tells the full story.
